Ken DeStefanis is the founder and advisor of Competitive Edge Athletics and a National Wrestling Hall of Fame honoree whose lifetime in the sport has impacted generations of wrestlers, coaches, and families throughout the Northeast.
Ken grew up in Bayville, New York, as part of the renowned DeStefanis wrestling family. All five DeStefanis brothers wrestled and served as captains at Locust Valley High School. Brothers Rob, Al, and Carl each became two-time New York State champions, and Carl went on to capture the 1984 NCAA Division I National Championship at Penn State. The family’s extraordinary contribution to the sport earned recognition as Long Island’s “First Family of Wrestling.”
Ken continued his wrestling career at Central Connecticut State University, compiling a 66-9 collegiate record, earning All-New England honors twice, winning multiple New England freestyle championships, and qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Championships.
After competing, Ken transitioned into coaching and quickly established himself as one of the region’s leading teachers and recruiters. Following coaching positions at Daniel Hand High School, Wesleyan University, and Central Connecticut, he was named Head Wrestling Coach at Central Connecticut State in 1984.
Over 12 seasons, Ken transformed Central Connecticut into one of New England’s strongest Division I programs. His teams never posted a losing season and compiled a 153-58-2 dual-meet record, winning three consecutive New England Championships and an East Coast Conference championship. Under his leadership, 16 wrestlers captured New England Division I titles, more than 30 qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships, and numerous athletes earned national recognition.
Ken was named New England Coach of the Year twice, East Coast Wrestling Association Coach of the Year, and Wrestling USA's Connecticut Wrestling Man of the Year.
Perhaps Ken's greatest legacy, however, is the number of wrestlers he helped develop into coaches, mentors, and leaders themselves. Former Central Connecticut wrestlers and coaches influenced by Ken went on to lead successful wrestling programs throughout New England. Among them was longtime Danbury High School head coach and Hall of Famer Ricky Shook, whose teams became one of the dominant programs in Connecticut wrestling, as well as numerous other athletes who carried Ken's approach to wrestling into the next generation.
While coaching at Central Connecticut, Ken founded Competitive Edge Wrestling Camp, which became one of the region's most respected wrestling camps and clinics. Over 27 years, Competitive Edge welcomed more than 25,000 wrestlers from 21 states and seven countries, along with more than 2,000 coaches. Ken also provided more than 500 camp scholarships to young wrestlers who otherwise might not have had the opportunity to attend.
His dedication to developing wrestlers went far beyond wins and losses. Ken built Competitive Edge around the values that shaped his own life in wrestling—hard work, discipline, loyalty, sportsmanship, relationships, and giving back to the wrestling community.
In 2013, Ken was inducted into the Connecticut Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, receiving its Lifetime Service to Wrestling honor.
Today, Ken continues that legacy as Founder and Advisor of Competitive Edge Athletics, providing mentorship, experience, and a connection to the wrestling community that he has spent more than five decades helping to build.
